Research Engineer Intern
Bay State Energy is the first company to serve the rapidly growing microreactor market as a platform‑agnostic innovator in power cycle technology.
Our patent‑pending power cycle design aims to completely replace the turbine and its subsystems for 1–2 MWe microreactors with
high‑performing thermoelectric generators (TEGs), slashing mechanical complexity, cost, weight, and licensing timelines,
while improving safety and net efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Model heat transfer, power conversion, and thermoelectric physics in Python, MOOSE, OpenFOAM, ANSYS, or similar tools.
- Design and instrument a 1 kWe bench‑scale TEG chamber inside a closed‑circuit helium loop (700 – 900 K).
- Prototype and test: specify heaters, sensors (temperature distribution, heat flux, material performance), centrifugal pump hardware; execute experiments and analyze data.
- Collaborate with founders and DOE‑connected advisors to iterate on TEG chamber designs.
- Travel may be required (2–3 trips) to lab/partner sites; expenses covered.
Preferred Skills
- Experience constructing or simulating TEGs or other thermoelectric systems.
- Coursework or experience in thermal‑fluids, heat transfer, material performance, or FEA/CFD simulation.
- Familiarity with nuclear energy systems.
- Solid coding ability and data‑analysis savvy.
- Advanced CAD projects or coursework.
- Experience with laboratory safety protocols for high‑temperature equipment.
Logistics
- Term: September – December 2025 (flexible around finals).
- Hours: 15 – 25 per week (accommodated around coursework).
- Compensation: $18 – $30 per hour.
- Location: Hybrid (Boston, MA or Chicago, IL); fully remote considered.
Why Bay State Energy?
- IP appraised in the $9.8 M – $46.8 M range, backed by our DOE EnergyTech UP win.
- Mentorship from founders, national lab researchers, and industry veterans.
- Flexible hours and opportunities to publish or present your work.
- Shape a first‑of‑its‑kind power cycle platform for a market projected to exceed 12 000 deployments by 2050 (> $250 B) per INL.
- Advance clean nuclear energy to address climate change, fuel finiteness, and growing energy demands.
- Potential path to full‑time with a generous equity package.
